VISITING THE “sanctuaries of art” is usually rather like going to a private view: a glance at whatever is hanging on the wall between handshakes and greetings. The canvases fill the gaps in the conversation. The benefit is not so much aesthetic as sociological. What enraptures is the jostling; not the thing itself, but the clamour around it.

IN NAPLES nobody would dream of asking you with whom, or in what hotel, you are staying: it is a matter of indifference. In Venice there is no escape: Gritti? Danieli? Duc de C’s palazzo? M’s apartment? (Total consternation if the answer is “Youth hostel” or “University dormitory”). In the theatre—unlike the anonymous auditorium of a cinema—the distance of a seat from the stage has a social, almost moral significance. You are never in the second row of the stalls, or the upper balcony, merely by chance.
